f you have just moved to MCBH Kaneohe Bay with your children, finding your way around can be a daunting task. Between arranging housing, getting your household goods and trying to find out about schools, health care and services here, it can be a bit overwhelming. Here are some places you can find good information and resources for day cares, schools and activities and families with children:
ON BASE:
MCBH Kaneohe Bay Childcare Resource and Referral: (808) 257-2535. Hours of Operation: M-F, 0730-1700 (5:00 p.m.). Start here for any Pre-school age children, and to register School Age children for Youth Activities (which you may also do at Youth Activities). Cost is $25/year per child to enroll. Children will need to be enrolled to use any day care facilities, the Teen Center, and to sign up for any sports leagues and classes offered on Base. Parents will also have to pay this fee to pick up referrals for Family Day Care. They can also give you information about the Family Childcare program if you want to become a provider. Finally, they can give you information on the Care Respite Program, where they can help you fund 10 hours per month of free childcare if your spouse is deployed for a prolonged period of time in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom at with either the Olina CDC or a Family Childcare Provider.
Olina Child Development Center :( 808) 257-8354. Hours of Operation: M-F, 0730-1630 (4:30. p.m.) Once enrolled in Youth Activities, you can enroll children from ages 6 weeks to 10 years old for up to 10 hours of hourly care per week. You will have to go through an application process before you can make reservations, where they will ask you to bring your child's health records, give you a tour and provide you with information on their policies and procedures. Once you have signed your child(ren) up you can reserve spaces by using their weekly call in reservation system.
Kupulau Child Development Center: (808)257-1388. Hours of Operation: M-F, 0600-1800 (6:00 p.m.). They offer Full Day and Part Day programs for children ages 6 weeks to Pre-Kindergarten. Full Day Program children may attend for full hours of operation, and the Part Day Program runs from 0830-1430(2:30 p.m.). All spaces are filled from a waiting list which is maintained by Resource and Referral Office. The Full Day Program gives priorities to Dual Military, Single Parent Military, and households where the Non-Active Duty spouse is either working or enrolled in school full time.
Youth Activities: (808)254-7610. Hours of Operation: M-F, 0900-1700(5:00 p.m.) They have several programs. The School Age Care Program is a new before and after school program for school aged children that provides local pickup from Mokapu Elementary. They will also be providing full time care on school waiver days, and State Holidays. Fees will vary according to total household income. Enrollment in this program will ensure priority in Camp Adventure Programs which provide care for school age children on school breaks. The Boys and Girls Club or Teen Center is an afterschool program for children ages 10-18. It operates Monday through Friday from afterschool until 2000(9:00 p.m.). It emphasizes the national programs of the Boys and Girls Club, and includes homework support and outdoor activities. Sports Leagues are also offered throught the year, includingbasketball, soccer, flag football, cheerleading, baseball, volleyball, wrestling, and inline hockey. Teams will be divided by age, and registration fees will include uniforms. Finally, Youth Activities hosts contract enrichment programs for children of all ages: Including: Dance, Movement Academy which offers Dance and Gymnastics classes on site, Goju-Kan Karate, Art and Sewing Classes, Piano Lessons and Driver's Education. Each contractor determines their own fees, but offers classes at a substantially discounted rate here on base near the Youth Activities Center.
MCCS Aquatics Programs: Kaneohe Bay Main Pool. (808)254-7655. Hours of Operation: Seasonal. Offers Red Cross certified swim lessons, Jr. Lifeguard programs and has a diving team as well.
MCCS Marina and Outdoor Recreation Center: (808)254-7666. Hours of operation: M-F, 0800 to 1800 (6:00 p.m.). They have Saturday and Sunday hours during the summer. The marina offers a periodic Junior Basic Sailing class for kids ages 8-18. The Outdoor Recreation Center has all sorts of outdoor supplies for rent including camping gear, party gear and inflatable bounce houses.
